Tigner Traineeship Expectations
Tigner Traineeship Program Expectations
- Receive extensive education in accelerator science, including formal coursework and seminars.
- Conduct accelerator research aligned with the Tigner Traineeship’s targeted research areas at their home institutions.
- Spend at least one summer in a research internship at a DOE National Laboratory.
CLARIFICATION: DOE requires that all Traineeship graduate students participate in a “DOE-focused” program element. Plan to spend one summer (~3 months) in a research internship at a DOE National Laboratory, typically at the end of your 2nd year in the program. The best way to fund this is through the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program.Detailed information about the SCGSR program, including access to the online application system, can be found at: https://science.osti.gov/wdts/scgsr/. If you are already spending a substantial time at a DOE lab as part of your PhD research, this will likely count as your “DOE-focused” program element.
While long-term or summer research internships at a National Laboratory are the default expectation for your “DOE-focused” program element, other options might be possible. These could include multiple, shorter research visits at a National Laboratory, scientific or technical workshops at a laboratory that hosts unique research capabilities or facilities relevant to the target STEM discipline area, and workshops related to professional development skills critical to a broader range of career options (e.g., research project management, construction project management, entrepreneurial skills, science communication, technology transfer, or related regulatory requirements).
