Title: The Physics of Transverse Emittance Manipulations

Speaker: Bruce Carlsten

This talk will review the physics of phase-space manipulations in particle beams, which is a modern tool to exquisitely customize the transverse and longitudinal particle-beam parameters in accelerators. The key elements of several manipulation schemes will be discussed, focusing on the underlying beam physics. Particular attention will be paid to what is known as emittance compensation (which is widely used in X-ray free-electron lasers to reach extremely high beam brightnesses) and to special schemes of non-symplectic manipulations.
